I started this project in the middle of 2006, when I met this ancient nordic game. O Tablut, or Tafl, is part of a game family said by researchers as the grandfathers of Chess.

The Project

I intended to recreate the board and pieces of the game. I’ve made a rock textured board, where the squared are like cracks on the rock. The same for the game pieces, with different images for both sides. The King’s piece was made from several textures of metal and gems. This was my very first attempt to recreate an ancient boardgame, that usually has a very oldish design.
During the development, I felt that could take this a little further and deal with the game as a product. Then I created a brand and the game manual, that along with the board and pieces, can be downloaded at the end of this page.

Next steps

I intend to continue developing this project, creating new presentations for Tablut and it’s variants. That’s also why I’m publishing this project under a Creative Commons license.
